Who we are
Sailing Timer is developed by HeadSoft Tech ("we", "us") as a race-start countdown app for Android, published under the package name net.headsoft.sailingtimer. This policy covers the Sailing Timer app only — for the HeadSoft Tech website, see our general privacy policy. Questions about this policy or your data can be sent to hello@headsoft.net.
What the app collects
Sailing Timer collects two kinds of information:
- Usage analytics, via Google Firebase Analytics — see below.
- Settings you enter (boat name, sail number, your starting sequence, sailing venue, appearance preferences) — stored only on your device, never sent to us.
The app does not request access to your device's GPS location, contacts, photos, microphone or camera, and has no account or sign-in system.
Usage analytics
Sailing Timer uses Google Firebase Analytics to understand which features are actually used, so we know what's worth improving. It records anonymous, aggregated events — for example starting or stopping the countdown, syncing, skipping through the sequence, or opening Settings, the race-signals reference or the wind forecast. These events are not tied to your name, email or any account (the app has none), though Firebase may associate them with a device identifier and coarse, IP-derived location under Google's own privacy policy. You can reset or limit this at the device level through your Google Account's ad settings (Settings → Google → Ads), or by uninstalling the app.
Sailing venue & wind forecast
The app shows a wind forecast for your sailing venue. It does not read your device's GPS location to do this — instead, you type a venue name, search for one, or enter coordinates directly. Searching sends your typed text to Nominatim / OpenStreetMap, a free public geocoding service, to find matching places. Once a venue is set, its coordinates are sent to Open-Meteo, a free public weather API, to fetch the forecast. Neither service requires an account, and the app sends nothing beyond the coordinates and query text needed to answer the request. The venue you choose is saved only on your device.
What's stored on your device
Your boat name, sail number, starting sequence, sound and appearance settings, and chosen venue are stored locally in the app's Android preferences. None of this is uploaded to HeadSoft or any server we control. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage in Android Settings, removes all of it.
Third-party services
- Google Firebase Analytics: anonymous usage events, as described above.
- Open-Meteo: weather forecast data for your chosen venue.
- Nominatim / OpenStreetMap: venue name search and geocoding.
We do not sell or share your data with advertisers, and the app carries no advertising SDK.
Children
Sailing Timer is a utility for sailboat racing and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Data retention
On-device settings persist until you uninstall the app or clear its data in Android Settings. Analytics events are retained by Google Firebase under its own data-retention settings; see Google's privacy and data policies for specifics.
Your rights
Because almost everything the app stores lives only on your device, the most direct way to remove your data is to uninstall the app or clear its storage. For anything else — including analytics data associated with your device — contact hello@headsoft.net and we'll help.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the update will be posted on this page with a new "last updated" date.
